Adding a Search widget to a creative

You can enable viewers to search from well-known search engines, such as Google or Bing Maps, directly from your ad. You can also let viewers search from a custom search engine, such as your store catalog. You do this by adding a Search widget to your creative.

Before you start

  • Create an In-Banner Video creative, an In-Stream Video creative, or a Rich Media creative. For steps, see Assembling a creative from a template or Assembling a creative from scratch.
  • If you want to display a custom search button, create the images to display. You can use the following images for the button, depending on how the viewer is interacting with the button:
    • An image that displays until the viewer interacts with the button (the Up state).
    • An image that displays when a user, when the viewer moves their cursor over the button (the Over state).
    • An image that displays when the viewer clicks the button (the Down state).
    • An image that represents the clickable area of the button (the Hit state). This image is not visible to the viewer.
Each image should be the same size. For information about the types of images that you can upload, see Supported file formats.

To add a Search widget to a creative

  1. Navigate to the Division, Account, and Campaign of the creative.
  2. Click the Campaign Management tab, then click the Creatives tab.
  3. Click Edit for the creative. The Mixpo Studio opens.
  4. Add the widget to your creative:
    1. Select the canvas tab that you want to add the widget to.
    2. Click the Overlays tab, then click Widget.
    3. Click Our stock library.
    4. Select the Search widget, then click Add media. The widget is added to your creative.
  5. Select the Search widget. In the settings area, new widget options appear.
  6. In the Overlay name field, type a name for the widget. The name is displayed in reports about the widget.
  7. To change the size of the widget, click and drag the sizing handles on the corners of the widget.
Note: To make sure that the live ad is optimized for mobile devices, the widget should be at least 44 × 44 pixels, so that it is big enough for viewers to tap. If you added the widget to the Timeline Canvas tab, leave at least 44 pixels between the widget and the bottom of the creative, so that viewers can tap the video player controls.
  8. From the Search engine drop-down list, select the website that you want viewers to search from. If you want viewers to search from a website other than the standard websites, select Custom.
  9. To upload a personalized search button, select Customize search button. Upload the images that you prepared, as described in Before you start.
  10. In the Default text field, type a search hint to display in the search box. For example, "Search our catalog."
  11. If you selected a Custom search engine, do the following:
    1. In a new browser tab, open the website of the search engine. For example, yahoo.com.
    2. Search for any word. For example, search for dogs.
    3. Copy the URL of the search results page from the navigation bar of your browser. For example, https://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=AmKc.QTBvIwhfP0yWAwsTi2bvZx4?p=dogs&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-901&fp=1.
    4. Paste the entire URL of the search results page into the Search URL field in the Mixpo Search widget.
    5. In the search results URL, locate the phrase that includes the word that you searched for. The phrase follows the format variableName=searchTerm, where variableName is a variable name assigned by the search engine, and searchTerm is the word that you searched for. In the example above, the phrase is p=dogs, and the variable name is p. Type the variable name in the Variable name field in the Mixpo Search widget.
    6. Optionally, you can display search results for words that you specify, in addition to words that your viewers specify. To do this, type the words that you want to display in the search results in the Additional search terms field.
  12. If you want to analyze your viewers' search terms, select the Show search terms in client report check box. Each search term that your viewers search for is displayed in the Ad Interactivity report. Because this can make the report very long, Mixpo recommends that you leave this check box cleared unless you need this information. To learn more about the Ad Interactivity report, see Analyzing performance based on the elements in an ad: Ad Interactivity Report.
  13. If you added the widget to the Timeline Canvas tab, specify how you want the widget to appear in your video sequence. Do the following:
    1. From the Enter and Exit drop-down lists, select the entrance and exit animation effects.
    2. In the Duration field, type the number of seconds that you want the widget to appear for.
    3. In the Start time field, type the number of seconds into the video that you want the widget to appear.
Tip: You can also drag the widget on the visual timeline to adjust the timing. For steps, see Adjusting the timing of video content using the visual timeline.
  14. Click Save.
  15. To test that the creative appears the way that you want it to, return to the Mixpo Platform and click Preview.
