Updating a geotargeting profile

You can update a geotargeting profile to include new geotargeting variables, update the text and images that are displayed in geographically targeted creatives, and so on.

Depending whether you want to retain geotargeting performance data, see the following sections:

  • If you want to retain old performance data, you can modify an existing profile by adding or inactivating geotargeting variable values. For steps, see Modifying a geotargeting profile.
  • If you want to delete old performance data, you can replace an existing geotargeting profile with a new profile. For steps, see Replacing a geotargeting profile.

For background information about geotargeting variables, see Understanding geotargeting variables. For steps to create a geotargeting profile, see Creating a geotargeting profile.

Modifying a geotargeting profile

You can modify a geotargeting profile when you want to change the geographically targeted content that is displayed in your creatives.

When you modify a geotargeting profile, your performance data is retained.

For example, your original geotargeting profile contains the cities Chicago and Dallas. After running your campaign for a few weeks, you decide to stop delivering geographically targeted content to Dallas viewers. You also decide to start delivering geographically targeted content to viewers in Seattle. If you modify your geotargeting profile, you can add Seattle and deactivate Dallas without losing any performance data.

Before you start

To modify a geotargeting profile

  1. Click Settings, then click Client settings.
  2. Click Geotargeting profiles.
  3. Click the Profile settings icon Profile Settings icon next to the geotargeting profile that you want to modify.
  4. [TBD download the geotargeting profile]
  5. Open the file in a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft® Excel®, then make the following changes:
Warning: Do not modify the ID column.
Warning: When you delete a variable column from a geotargeting profile, any creatives that include the geotargeting variable are no longer able to display the geotargeted text or images. In addition, all the data related to that variable is permanently deleted. If you stop using a variable in your creatives, consider retaining the column for the variable in your geotargeting profile.
    • To add a new geotargeting variable, create a new column for the variable and add a value to each row. For background information about defining geotargeting variables, see Creating a geotargeting profile.
    • To add new variable values, add new rows to the bottom of the file and add values to each row. Leave the ID and Active/Inactive columns blank.
    • To rename a variable, change the column name.
Tip: Mixpo recommends that you avoid renaming variables, because you must change the name of the variable in any creatives that include the variable.
    • To stop tracking a variable value, in the Active/Inactive column in the row for that value, type I for inactive.
  6. Save your updated geotargeting profile with the same file name, in .csv (comma-separated values) format.
  7. In the Geotargeting Profiles dialog box in Mixpo, [TBD upload the updated geotargeting profile].
  8. To return to the Mixpo Platform, click Return.
  9. If you changed the name of any geotargeting variables, update the variable name in any creatives that include the variable. For steps, see the following:

Replacing a geotargeting profile

If you finish running a campaign and no longer want to retain any performance data related to the geotargeting variables in a geotargeting profile, you can replace the profile with a new profile.

Replacing a geotargeting profile overwrites the current profile, and all performance data related to the geotargeting profile is permanently deleted. For example, suppose that you do the following:

  1. On June 1, you upload a geotargeting profile that contains the cities Chicago and Dallas.
  2. On June 14, you create a geotargeting report to see how your geographically targeted ads performed.
  3. On June 15, you replace your old geotargeting profile with a new geotargeting profile. The new profile contains one of the original cities, Chicago, plus a new city, Seattle.
  4. On June 30, you create a geotargeting report. The report contains data only for the cities in the current geotargeting profile: Chicago and Seattle. Data for the city that you deleted, Dallas, and all data for Chicago prior to June 15, is no longer available.
