Creating a geotargeting profile

If you want to include custom geotargeting variables in your ads, you must create and upload a geotargeting profile. A geotargeting profile does the following:

  • Identifies each geographic location that you want to target, such as city or designated market area (DMA).
  • Defines the custom geotargeting variables that you want to include in your ads, such as phone number or website (see Understanding geotargeting variables).
  • Provides values for the custom variables based on viewer locations.

Creating and uploading a geotargeting profile

You create your geotargeting profile as a comma-separated values (CSV) file, then upload it to the Mixpo Platform. For steps, see the following:

  1. To create a geotargeting profile
  2. To upload a Client-level geotargeting profile
  3. To assign a geotargeting profile

Example geotargeting profiles

If you want each viewer to contact the sales agent in their own city, you can create the following geotargeting profile:

Sample geotargeting profile by city

In this example, the first column (city) identifies each geographic location that you want your ads to target. The subsequent columns define your custom geotargeting variables, name and phone. In each row, you provide values for the target cities, agent names, and phone numbers.

As another example, you want to offer a promotion to viewers who are within a certain distance of each of your service outlets. To do this, you create the following geotargeting profile:

Sample geotargeting profile by zip code radius

In this example, viewers who are within 15 miles of the 98101 zip code will see an offer for free tires.

Before you start

To create a geotargeting profile

  1. Using a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft® Excel®, create a CSV file with the following format:
Tip: For examples, see Example geotargeting profiles.
    • In the header of the first column (or the first and second columns, for zip code profiles), identify the specific geographic locations that you want to target. The following locations are available:
Geographic location Exact column heading Column values
Country country_code Country code as defined by the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard. See https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#search/code/.
State state_code State code as defined by the United States Postal Service (USPS). See https://www.usps.com/.
      City city City name
Area code area_code U.S. telephone area codes. See https://www.nationalnanpa.com/area_code_maps/ac_map_static.html.
Zip code range First column heading: zip_code
      Second column heading: end_zip
Official U.S. zip codes as defined by the USPS. See https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction_input.
Tip: To create a profile based on individual zip codes, use the same zip code value for zip_code and end_zip.
Zip code radius First column heading: zip_code
      Second column heading: distance
First column: Official U.S. zip codes as defined by the USPS.
Second column: Distance from the zip code in miles.
Designated market area (DMA) dma_code Official DMA codes. See http://www.stssamples.com/dma-codes.asp.
    • In the headers of subsequent columns, define the custom geotargeting variables that you want to include in your ads. Name your custom variables as follows:
      • Custom variable names must start with a letter.
Tip: Prices that appear in overlays, such as $10, are not confused with variables as long as the character following the dollar sign ($) is a number.
      • Custom variable names can include letters, numbers, and the underscore character (_).
      • Each custom variable name must be unique.
    • In each row, provide the possible values for your geographic locations and custom variables.
      • If you want to display geographically targeted images to viewers, see Adding a geographically targeted image to a creative for detailed information about the values to provide for your image variable.
      • You can display a randomly rotating set of values to viewers in the same location. To do this, include multiple rows for the same geographic location. For example, a fast food franchise has two locations in Seattle. By including two rows for Seattle in its geotargeting profile, the franchise can randomly display one of the two restaurant locations to Seattle-based viewers of the ad.
  2. Save the file as a .csv file type.
