Assigning a creative to a placement

Each ad that a viewer sees consists of two parts: the visual content of the ad, called a creative, and information about where and how the ad is trafficked, called a placement. Before you can traffic an ad, you must associate a creative with a placement.

When you associate a creative with a placement, you specify the following:

  • Play mode: How an ad behaves when a viewer visits the webpage with the ad. For example, you can play an ad when a viewer hovers their cursor over the ad.
  • Audio: How an ad's audio plays. For example, you can mute the audio when a viewer moves their cursor away from the ad.
  • Expansion behavior: How an ad expands. For example, an ad can push down the existing content on a webpage.
Note: If you traffic an expandable ad on a website that has a different domain (web address) from the ad, you must enable frame busting to make sure the ad fully expands. For background information and steps, see Allowing expandable ads to fully expand: frame busting.
  • Ad tag: The type of ad tag assigned to the ad.

If you want to change a creative in the middle of a campaign, you can assign a new creative to an existing placement. For example, you can display one creative in the days leading up to a holiday, then display a different creative after the holiday. Your ad is displayed uninterrupted and you can continue to use the same ad tag.

Tip: You can specify the default settings that are selected for all placements by creating a publisher profile. For steps, see Setting default placement settings with a publisher profile.

Before you start

To assign a creative to a placement

  1. Navigate to the appropriate Division, Account, and Campaign.
  2. Click the Campaign Mangement tab, then click the Placements tab.
  3. Select the check box next to the placement that you want to assign a creative to, then click Edit Placement.
  4. From the Ad type drop-down list, select the type of creative, such as In-Banner Video. For background information about the types of creatives, see Ad types.
  5. From the Creative drop-down list, select the creative that you want to assign to the placement.
  6. Select the ad's play mode: If your ad contains an In-Banner Video creative or an expanding Rich Media creative, you can specify how you want the viewer to interact with the ad to make the ad play. In the Play Mode area or the Expand Initiation area, depending on the type of ad, select from the following:
Note: In many cases, the website where an ad is embedded has play mode related policies. Some websites do not allow ads to start playing automatically. Make sure you know a website's policies before you set your ad's play mode.
    • Roll over to play or Roll over to expand (default): The ad plays (or expands, for expandable ads) when viewers hover their cursor over the ad's StartFrame, which is the image that viewers see before they interact with your ad. If an overlay has the Expand Ad action assigned to it (see Expanding an ad when a viewer clicks an overlay), the ad expands when viewers hover their cursor over the overlay. Otherwise, the ad expands when viewers hover their cursor over the background of the ad.
Tip: Performance data analysis for hundreds of ads shows that roll-over-to-play ads receive significantly more views than click-to-play ads.
    • Click to play or Click to expand: The ad plays (or expands, for expandable ads) when viewers click the StartFrame. If an overlay has the Expand Ad action assigned to it (see Expanding an ad when a viewer clicks an overlay), the ad expands when viewers click the overlay. Otherwise, the ad expands when viewers click the background of the ad.
    • Autoplay or Auto expand: The ad plays (or expands, for expandable ads) as soon as a viewer visits the webpage where the ad is embedded.
  7. Customize the ad's play mode: If your ad contains an In-Banner Video creative or an expanding Rich Media creative, you can customize how the ad plays. Configure the following:
Note: Depending on the type of creative that you are assigning to your placement and the play mode that you select, different configuration options are available.
    • Skip countdown: By default, ads display a three second countdown before they start playing. To start the ad without a countdown, select the check box.
Note: If your ad expands, the expandable content starts loading 0.5 seconds (500 milliseconds) after viewers hover their cursor over the ad. However, a video view is counted when a viewer holds their cursor over the ad for at least 1 second.
    • Autoplay retries: How many times you want the ad to attempt to replay for each viewer, within a certain period of time (see the Expand once every n hours setting).
  8. Select how the ad's audio plays: If your ad contains an In-Banner Video creative, you can select how the ad's audio plays. Configure the following:
Note: Depending on the play mode that you select, different configuration options are available.
    • Audio off: If your ad has sound, by default, the ad's sound plays. To mute the audio, select the check box. If you mute the audio, you can specify whether the ad's audio plays when a viewer hovers their cursor over the ad or clicks the ad.
    • Mute audio on roll out: To turn off the ad's sound when a viewer moves their cursor away from the ad, select the check box.
  9. Select how the ad expands: If your ad contains an expanding In-Banner Video creative or an expanding Rich Media creative, you can specify how the ad expands. In the Expand Type area, select from the following:
Note: Depending on the expansion behavior that you select, different configuration options are available.
    • Directional (default): The ad expands in the direction that you specify. Do the following:
      1. From the Expand direction drop-down list, select the direction that you want the ad to expand.
      2. For the Expand anchor, select the image that illustrates how you want the ad to expand. The ad's initial content (the StartFrame) is displayed as a solid rectangle, the position that the ad expands into is displayed as a dashed outline, and the anchor point that the ad expands from is indicated by a red dot.
Tip: If the StartFrame is still visible when the ad is expanded, viewers can continue to interact with content on the StartFrame.
    • Pushdown: The ad expands downward, pushing down the other content on the webpage, rather than overlapping it. Do the following:
    • Full page takeover: The ad expands to take over the full size of the viewer's web browser. Because expandable ads have fixed dimensions, the area around the ad is displayed as a shaded area that masks the other content on the webpage. Do the following:
      1. Adjust the Lightbox opacity slider to specify the opacity of the mask around the ad. The mask displays on desktop and mobile devices.
  10. Customize how the ad expands: If your ad contains an expanding In-Banner Video creative or an expanding Rich Media creative, you can customize how the ad expands. Configure the following:
Note: Depending on the type of creative that you are assigning to your placement and the expansion behavior that you select, different configuration options are available.
    • Collapse on roll out: By default, viewers must click a close button to collapse an expanded ad. To collapse the ad when a viewer moves their cursor away from the ad, select the check box.
    • Expand timing: Select whether you want the ad to expand before or after the countdown. If you skip the countdown, select whether you want the ad to expand before or after the expandable content loads.
    • Expand once every n hours: Specify how frequently you want the ad to expand for the same viewer. For example, an ad is set to expand once every 24 hours. A viewer visits the webpage with the ad at 2 PM, and the ad expands and collapses automatically. At 3 PM, the same viewer returns to the webpage. The ad does not expand automatically. Instead, the viewer has to hover their cursor over the ad to expand it. The next day, the viewer returns to the webpage at 6 PM, more than 24 hours after they last visited the webpage. The ad expands automatically.
Note: This setting depends upon a cookie that is installed on a viewer's web browser the first time the viewer visits a webpage with the ad. This cookie is what makes it possible for the Mixpo platform to track the time between page visits. If a viewer opts out of Mixpo cookies (see the Mixpo Privacy Policy at https://www.mixpo.com/legal/) or all cookies using a browser setting, no cookie is installed, and the ad automatically expands each time the viewer visits the webpage.
    • Collapse after N seconds: By default, an ad automatically collapses if the viewer does not interact with it. If your ad is an automatically expanding ad, specify how long you want the ad to remain expanded for before it automatically collapses
  11. In the Set Up Ad Tag area, select the appropriate Ad tag type for your ad. For help selecting the correct ad tag type, see Choosing the correct type of ad tag.
  12. Click Save placement. The creative is assigned to the placement, and an ad tag is generated.
  13. To preview the ad, return to the Placements tab. In the row for the placement, click the name of the creative displayed in the Creatives column, then click Preview in page.
  14. To retrieve the ad tag for your ad, on the Placements tab, select the check box next to the placement, then click Pull tags. The ad tag is downloaded as a text file. Embed the ad tag in the website or ad network where you are running your campaign.
