Choosing the correct type of ad tag

An ad tag is a piece of code that is inserted into a website. The website determines which ad to display by looking for the ad that is associated with the ad tag.

Depending on the type of ad, see the following recommendations for the type of ad tag that you should select:

For background information on the types of ads, see Ad types.

The same ad tags work on secure (HTTP) and standard (HTTPS) webpages.

For steps to assign an ad tag, see Assigning a creative to a placement. For steps to retrieve an ad tag, see Retrieving an ad tag.

Note: If you change your ad tag settings after an ad tag has been embedded in the website where the ad will display, you must update the website with the new ad tag.

In-Banner Video ads, Rich Media ads, and Image ads

If your ad is running on a specific ad network, you should select the ad tag type that is specified by the network. Network-specific ad tags include clicktags and other network requirements that deliver the best performance and allow for the most accurate tracking.

If you don't know what ad tag to use, select Generic JavaScript.

In-Stream Video ads

The ad tag type that you should select depends on the IAB standard that your publisher's player is compliant with:

  • If your publisher's player is VAST-VPAID compliant, select the VAST + VPAID (Interactive Video) ad tag, then select the Universal VAST media file type.
  • If your publisher's player is VAST-MP4 compliant, use the VAST (Flat Video) ad tag.

If possible, you should select the VAST-VPAID (Interactive Video) ad tag. In-Stream Video ads with a VAST (Flat Video) tag have limited interactivity, as follows:

Feature VAST + VPAID (Interactive Video) VAST (Flat Video)
Overlay actions Works as expected. Not interactive.
Interactive widgets Works as expected. Not interactive.
Open links in a new window You can configure links to open in a new browser window, or in a frame on top of the site where the ad is running. Links always open in a new browser window.
Sequencing, dayparting, rotation Works as expected. Works as expected, unless third-party cookies are disabled in the browser. If cookies are disabled, the first creative always plays.
Geotargeting Works as expected. Only the clickthrough URL can be geotargeted. Mixpo does not record geographic data for clicks, so you cannot compare the ad's performance in different geographic locations.
Conversion tracking Works as expected. Works as expected.
Third-party tracking URLs Works as expected. Works as expected.

Ads targeted for a mobile app

You can run Mixpo ads in mobile apps.

For In-Banner Video ads and Rich Media ads, select the Mobile In-App (MRAID) ad tag if your mobile app is MRAID (Mobile Rich Media Ad Interface Definitions) compliant. If your mobile app is not MRAID-compliant, contact Mixpo Client Services. To learn more about the MRAID standard, visit http://www.iab.com.

For Image ads, select the Generic JavaScript ad tag.

For In-Stream Video ads, select the VAST + VPAID (Interactive Video) tag if your app's video player is VPAID-2 compliant. If your app's video player is not VPAID-2 compliant, select the VAST (Flat Video) tag. In-Stream Video ads with a VAST (Flat Video) tag are not interactive.

Note: On the iPhone, videos displayed in mobile apps that are not MRAID-compliant play in the native QuickTime player and are not interactive.

Ads targeted for a mobile-specific website

You can run Mixpo ads in websites that are optimized for mobile devices.

For In-Banner Video ads, Rich Media ads, and Image ads, select the Generic JavaScript ad tag.

For In-Stream Video ads, select the VAST + VPAID (Interactive Video) tag if your video player is VPAID-2 compliant. If your video player is not VPAID-2 compliant, select the VAST (Flat Video) tag. In-Stream Video ads with a VAST (Flat Video) tag are not interactive.

Note: On the iPhone, videos running on mobile websites play in the native QuickTime player and are not interactive.
