Video resolution and bit rate

This article explains how Mixpo optimizes the quality of videos that are displayed to viewers.

When you upload a video (see Supported file formats), Mixpo stores the video at different bit rates and resolutions, depending upon the quality of the original video file.

Typically, a high definition (HD) video file has a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels, meaning that it is 1,920 pixels wide. However, Mixpo considers anything above 640 × 480 pixels to be HD, and therefore delivers the highest quality video. When you upload a video file that is greater than 640 × 480 pixels, the file is stored at three bit rates and resolutions:

Quality Resolution Bit rate
Highest Widths greater than 640 pixels From 1,000 to 2,500 kilobits per second (kbps)
Medium 640 × 480 pixels Approximately 800 kbps
Lowest 320 × 240 pixels Approximately 300 kbps

The frame rate of the original video file is preserved in all three resolutions. The Mixpo player plays the videos at 24 frames per second.

The Mixpo player automatically delivers the best bit rate to a viewer based on the viewer's screen size and available bandwidth. Depending on the viewer's bandwidth, the player selects the highest quality video that can download and start playing within three seconds.

Assuming that bandwidth is sufficient, the embed size, video size, and expansion settings also determine whether an ad plays with HD automatically enabled. HD is automatically enabled for:

  • Videos with widths of 400 pixels or greater. If you display a video that is smaller than the size of the expanded ad, HD settings are based on the size of the video, not the size of the ad.
  • Ads that expand to take over the full size of the viewer's web browser.

Note: The highest HD bit rate is enabled for ads where the video has a width greater than 640 pixels or the ad expands to take over the full size of the viewer's web browser.
